5-team bracket

Five teams do not fill a bracket, so three teams need byes. BracketBee gives them to the top three seeds: only one first-round match is played, and seeds 1–3 go straight to the semi-finals.

How a 5-team bracket is structured

Five teams need an 8-slot bracket. Seeds 1, 2 and 3 receive byes, so the only first-round match is 4 vs 5. The winner of that match joins seeds 1–3 in the semi-finals — four teams, two semi-finals and a final.

That is 4 matches in total (5 teams always need 4 matches to produce one winner), plus an optional third-place match if you want one more game for the beaten semi-finalists.

Byes are not matches

A bye is not a game, so it is not counted in the match total and it does not appear in the schedule. On the bracket the bye slot is labelled so players can see why a team has no opponent.

The advantage of byes over a play-in game: everybody who plays, plays for real points, and the top seeds are rewarded for their ranking rather than punished with an extra match.

Or run 5 teams as a round robin

With only five teams, a round robin is often the better event: 10 matches over 5 rounds and every team plays four games. BracketBee gives you a results matrix, a standings table and a fixture schedule for that too.

Frequently asked questions

Who gets the byes in a 5-team bracket?
Seeds 1, 2 and 3. They advance straight to the semi-finals while seeds 4 and 5 play the single first-round match.
How many matches is a 5-team bracket?
Four: one first-round match, two semi-finals and the final. Add a third-place match and it becomes five.
Is round robin better for 5 teams?
If you have the time, yes — 10 matches means everyone plays four games, which is a fairer event than a knockout where two teams go home after one game.
